“I Want Space and Light”
Commissioned by an artist potter, the garden studio is located in a quiet valley in the South Downs National Park. Carefully positioned among tall Scotts pine trees at one end of a mature garden, it is a space for contemplation and creativity. Deep overhanging eaves to the subtle S-shaped roof protect the south-facing glazing and frame views down the valley. Structurally, 4 green oak A-frames are connected with dowelled curved oak ‘crucks’ and support exposed oak purlins and concealed trusses tied back to the gable ends. The studio is covered in cedar, with shingles on the roof and vertical strips on the walls. Oak-framed pivoting glass doors on the south side can be opened up in the warmer weather. To the side and rear, flush-glazed vertical cedar slot windows with copper sills give views of the pine trunks. A linear rooflight is shaded by the pine trees in all seasons. The walls and roof are insulated with breathable sheep’s wool insulation and finished in white self-coloured plaster; the floors are York stone with underfloor heating.
