Whitecity shopping centre, London

Aerial view of proposed scheme.

A New Piece of London

Two new public transport interchanges in Shephers Bush and White City are linked by a large shopping centre. To south east is a new Shepherds Bush Central Line Station, West London Line Station and bus station. To the north west is a new Hammersmith and City Line Underground Station at Wood Lane and a new bus depot. The shopping centre itself is raised above a new Central Line depot and a car park for 4,500 cars over 3 storeys.

The proposals included protected and naturally ventilated covered streets, a large central covered Wintergarden, a nature reserve, a terraced bamboo garden, two public entrance squares and new public library.

Site clearance began in 2003 and the main contractor was Multiplex. In autumn 2004, during construction, Chelsfield’s interest in Whitecity was sold to a development consortium, including Westfield Shoppingtowns Ltd.  The commercial scheme’s retail design was taken in-house by Westfield and modified internally and externally, the scheme opening in 2008. Ian Ritchie Architects completed all of the public transport stations and train depot.

1999 - 2005 with Ian Ritchie Architects for client Chelsfield.

On the original scheme, my role was senior coordinating architect for the shopping centre, car park and public realm connections, from Stage 1 to Stage 5.
